Civil registration systems are the systems that register births, deaths, fetal deaths, and other vital events. Civil registration data is used to produce vital statistics, which are essential for government planning and policymaking; and birth and death registration create and retire an individual’s legal identity. In 2022, GHAI launched a CRVS legal review project in Mozambique to support the evaluation of national legal frameworks governing the CRVS system in Mozambique and identify key recommendations to strengthen the systems in line with international best practices.
